MNZ – QUALITY ASSURANCE / QUALITY GUARANTEE

MNZ is dedicated to producing only raw, monofloral Manuka honey, sourced directly from our beehives across New Zealand. Our advanced facility in New Zealand takes responsibility for every aspect of the honey's journey – from processing and packaging to labeling.

Upon arriving at our facility, all honey barrels are subjected to a thorough reception process. This includes visual inspections, honey sampling, and verification of origin documentation, as required by the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) for bee product processing. Our certified laboratory testing encompasses various aspects, such as methylglyoxal (MGO), dihydroxyacetone (DHA) content, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) levels, diastasis, DNA analysis of manuka pollen, moisture content, and microbiological parameters. After reception and quality assurance, the honey barrels are stored in a temperature-controlled environment within our facility, with ongoing sampling and testing to maintain quality standards.

We rigorously test our raw monofloral Manuka honey to ensure its authenticity as genuine New Zealand Manuka honey. Our testing criteria align with the MPI's definition established in December 2017, which includes five science-based markers to authenticate Manuka honey's origin, essential for certification for export. These markers include specific chemical tests and a DNA test for Manuka pollen.

Our processing and packaging processes are meticulously managed by our expert teams. They select honey barrels based on required quality parameters, ensuring that each batch meets the final product criteria. Quality checks are continuously performed throughout processing, and all Manuka honey batches undergo extensive laboratory testing before release. If needed, additional samples are sent to IANZ-accredited external laboratories for further analysis. Our honey must meet the MPI’s specifications as outlined in their 'Interim Labeling Guide for Manuka Honey' from July 31, 2014.

Each honey batch is released based on comprehensive data including production data, datasheets, test results, and origin documentation. This stringent process guarantees compliance with legal and market requirements. Every batch of MGO Manuka Honey must fulfill specific quality control criteria before release. Our criteria for releasing honey products are firmly established, encompassing aspects of research, regulation, and quality assurance.

Each batch of honey is accompanied by an analysis certificate, and the product is only released from quarantine for labeling and shipment after meeting strict quality assessments. MNZ is also an active participant in the E-Certificate of Official Assurances program, a web application by the New Zealand government (MPI), which provides guarantees to other countries regarding New Zealand’s exported animal and dairy products. This e-certificate accompanies every honey shipment to the EU and other countries with relevant treaties.

Information on Pesticides and Herbicides in Relation to Manuka Honey

MNZ adheres to a rigorous quality control process, subjecting all honey to comprehensive examinations. These include checks for microbiological elements, toxins, sugars, pollen content, moisture levels, flavor, color, and enzyme activity, as mandated by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Our facilities and operations are closely monitored by two key government agencies:

The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI): MPI oversees the country's food safety system, setting and monitoring standards within the food industry. MNZ actively participates in MPI’s national screening program to complement our batch monitoring efforts.

The New Zealand Environment Protection Authority (EPA): The EPA is instrumental in protecting bees and other pollinators by regulating the use of insecticides. In New Zealand, strict regulations are in place concerning neonicotinoid-containing insecticides, with specific measures to safeguard bees.

To ensure the purity of our honey, we strategically place our beehives in remote locations, far from agricultural areas, minimizing the risk of herbicide and pesticide contamination.

Information on Raw Manuka Honey

As nature intended, our Manuka honey is pure, raw, unprocessed, unpasteurized, and unheated. Honey naturally tends to crystallize over time, a process which preserves its rich taste and quality characteristics. The appearance of white residue or crystallization in raw Manuka honey is a natural occurrence, and the honey returns to its liquid state when gently warmed.

Our traditional method of extraction, centrifugation, removes larger pieces of wax, followed by careful pouring to eliminate impurities. This process ensures the honey remains natural and unaltered.

MNZ is committed to producing only raw, unfiltered, and unpasteurized monofloral MGO Manuka honey, embracing its natural qualities.

Characteristics of Raw Honey

Our raw MGO Manuka Honey is rich in natural enzymes, amino acids, and maintains a thicker consistency and grainy texture. It is characterized by its captivating aromas and authentic, natural flavor profile. The production involves four essential steps, all designed to preserve the honey’s natural state and qualities.
